There's simply not enough variety in the sound to maintain interest across a complete album.

This is guitarist Mirek Gil’s fourth solo album and it ploughs a very similar furrow to that of the bands in which he has performed (Collage, Believe); being a gentle Neo-Prog style, although in this case very gentle would be closer to the mark. Therein lies the rub; if I have a criticism of the album then it has to be that the tracks are all too similar, one-paced and pretty much all have the same feel. In isolation each song is a fine musical creation and makes for very pleasant listening indeed, while the musicianship is never less than superb. With Believe there are upbeat numbers, nothing here gets out of first gear.

The majority of the songs are very well arranged and I’d certainly not hit the skip button if any of them were to appear as part of a random selection of songs on my I-pod, but I really can’t envisage playing the album in its entirety again now that I’ve completed the review because the overriding impression is that the songs all seem to merge into one, there being very little to differentiate them from each other.

Opening track, ‘Time’ rather sets the template for the rest of the album with its delicate piano (courtesy of Konrad Wantrych - Believe) and acoustic guitar refrains, a soothing vocal display from Karol Wróblewski (Believe) and the subtle cello of Paulina Druch it’s highly melodic but very sedate. ‘Our Shoes’ breaks the mould ever so slightly; the instrumentation remains the same but this time there’s a bounce to the song that brings both Crowded House and Venice to mind, not least because of the terrific vocal harmonies. It’s as if they’ve suddenly found second gear, consequently it’s one of the few songs that actually gets your foot tapping and your head nodding, but that doesn’t last for long. ‘In Your Heart’ returns to the wistful and melancholy feel with Wróblewski’s accent being unusually obvious. ‘Find Me’ has something of The Flower Kings about it, with a fine melody and decent hook it has a slightly more uplifting feel to it than the other tracks around it. My notes for both ‘Change Your Heart’ and ‘Fix My Arms’ show my train of thought with comment “more of the same”; the latter though has a memorable chorus. ‘Start Again’ lifts the tempo; albeit only slightly but this is followed by the extremely mournful ‘Good Night’; at this stage I found myself wishing for something with a riff and a beat a view not changed when the closing track ‘Come Home’ rounding out matters in a similar vein.

There is no doubting the quality of the music and performances on offer here but there’s simply not enough variety in the sound to maintain interest across a complete album. There’s nothing wrong with a plaintive song but an entire album of them is just too much to take.
