A cohesive piece of work that I’ve no problem returning to again.

The Rabid Whole is a band project created primarily to showcase the writing and performing talents of Canadian multi instrumentalist/singer Andreas Weiss. ‘Refuge’ is the second album to carry the Rabid Whole name though the line-up seems to have undergone several changes during the last few years. The style of ‘Refuge’ is actually hard to pigeon-hole and I guess the same can be said of The Rabid Whole in general and the musical genre they fall into.

I could reference a host of comparisons including The Rasmus, Sisters of Mercy, Linkin Park and 30 Seconds To Mars but that would be rather unfair for a band searching for its own unique identity. The songs have commercial pop sensibilities and a metal attitude but the underlying industrial sound mixed with electronic loops and samples adds an extra element to create something a little fresher and unusual. The inventive female vocals then add another dimension to the overall delivery without diluting the aggressive flavour. The creation of the album has actually generated a little confusion. Despite the fact there is a line-up in place the CD booklet states that all the vocals, instruments and programming were performed by Weiss and the female lead vocalist was Sheenah Ko (Chalsey Noelle is the current female singer/keyboard player according to the sleeve notes and the biog states that all songs were performed by The Rabid Whole) so maybe the CD was created before the band was finalised.

‘Refuge’ contains 10 tracks, my favourite being the closing title track which brings together all The Rabid Whole elements in the space of five an a half minutes and is also responsible for the Sisters Of Mercy comparison. The crushing guitar riffs and complementary computer generated enhancements should prove attractive to the Linkin Park fans but the music and melodies are strong enough to appeal to a much wider audience. Aside from a throwaway instrumental (‘Rhythmic Reflection’) and a few unnecessary juvenile profanities (‘Metro’) the album is a cohesive piece of work that I’ve no problem returning to again. ‘Refuge’ won’t set the world on fire but it won’t be added to my coaster pile either!
