Encompasses everything I liked about fun AOR in the mid Eighties.

Well, this is welcome re-release from the cream of 80s German AOR. Released in 1986, this self titled belter of an album basically threw in every melodic rock cliché and ran with it unashamedly. It’s a very good time to bring the band back to the public attention, as they will no doubt have passed many people by.

The band had a couple of years to create the album, and although the follow up ‘Second Honeymoon’ (reviewed here previously) is often considered superior, I have always loved the debut that little bit more. It’s loud, brash and stuffed full of catchy tunes, starting with the brilliant opener ‘I Wanna Look In Your Eyes’, a track that deserved to top any rock chart in the world at the time. This is one of the albums that here in the UK we would have had to search like mad for, ending up at Shades on a wet Saturday morning, clutching a copy of ‘Kerrplunk!’ with a rave review in it, probably from Dave Reynolds. Then, you would get home, slip it on the turntable and just bounce around to the upbeat, finely “Craafted” AOR.

Vocalist Klaus Luley has a great voice for melodic rock, without an accent, and whilst he’s no Steve Overland (who is?) he did a fine job. The music is crunchy and very bouncy, except for the two nicely powerful ballads, with catchy choruses all over the place, although in the case of ‘Wasted Years’ the repetition perhaps get a bit much.

The album doesn’t outstay its welcome with just ten tracks, although the YesterRock release throws a further eight in for better measure! These include three tracks that didn’t make the album (and hence are a little rougher in sound) and five original demo versions of tracks that did. The demos have some value if you like to play spot the difference, and the three unused tracks are all up to scratch.

There’s a chance that you’ve never heard Craaft, and let me tell you that this means you are in for a treat. If you liked Bonfire and their ilk way back in the day, then this is a band that take what they did and ran away with it, for me a better band in every way. It’s nothing groundbreaking, but it encompasses everything I liked about fun AOR in the mid Eighties. Buy or die…
