One of those special albums where everything comes together and is just right.

AOR, quality AOR that is, doesn’t come along very often these days, more’s the pity. Thank goodness then that every once in a while an album is released that ticks all the boxes and you know in your heart after you’ve finished playing the CD, that this is the sound and the reason you fell in love with AOR in the first place. Soleil Moon have recorded just such an album.

The music is sublime, the melodies intoxicating, the vocals outstanding, the musicianship amazing, the production powerful, in other words this album is a triumph from beginning to end. Now you might think that I’m going a little overboard here but I believe that if any of you who deign to call yourselves AOR fans don’t like this album then there is something wrong with your ears. Yes I’m afraid I think this album is that good and the two gentlemen responsible for ‘OTWTE’: Larry King (Michael Thompson Band) and John Balsucci (Dennis De Young, Josh Groban, Celine Dion) should both take a long bow for providing this wonderful music.

So why then has this recording hit home with me so hard? Well firstly it’s Larry King’s vocal performance, which I think is the best of the year and is just what any fan of this genre could want: warm, resonant, emotional and above all powerful. Secondly the songs and arrangements on this album are so good and memorable that long after it has finished playing you find yourself humming one of its tunes, a tune that has become buried deep in your subconscious. And last but not least you have the amazing guitar work of guest musician Michael Thompson, which is worth the price of admission to this album all on its own.

Give yourself then to songs like ‘Love The Way You Love’ with its wonderful vocal harmony outro, ‘Freedom’ which conjures up flashes of Richard Marx at his best, the up-tempo guitar-driven ‘Down’, the hard hitting ‘Here I Am’, or the southern country rock of ‘Colorado’ and you will soon find yourselves in total agreement with me about this album. Finally if more evidence were needed of this CD’s quality, we have the awesome ‘Goodnight Irene’, which is probably the saddest (if it’s true) yet most heart warming song I have heard in a long, long time. Larry King sings from the bottom of his soul and the emotional vocal he comes up with is mesmerising (and is my song of the year no less).

I could go on about how special I think this album is but you need to discover this little gem yourselves. ‘On The Way To Everything’ is for me one of those special albums where everything comes together and is just right (the Goldilocks zone); and you know deep, deep down that you’re listening to something very special indeed.
