Worth a listen to if you are into bands such as Marillion and Pink Floyd.

Lost Earth is an Auckland, New Zealand based project carried out by multi-instrumentalist André Birt (taking on vocal, guitar, bass and keyboard duties) and drummer Brent Martin. The pair have released their debut and self-titled album independently and citing the lack of a live scene for new bands in their homeland the band is a studio-only affair. Having said that; it does have a big sound with a bright production and the drums are very upfront in the mix. Although the band classifies its sound as melodic rock, I would say that it is sounds like very accessible prog rock with a bit of classic rock thrown in. The vocals, although pleasant to listen to, are half-spoken on the whole and prevent some of the songs reaching their full potential.

The album commences with ´Never Be Heard´ which is quite upbeat with a steady guitar riff and a few interspersed solo breaks and a claxon sounding keyboard effect cropping up every so often. Following this, ´Time Is Running Out´ is a more interesting song with a lot more keyboards throughout and a driving drum beat and a vocal sung through a megaphone!

´Without A Choice´ works a lot better; it is more laid back than its predecessors and in being so, the vocals fit the music a lot better. The next track, ´Radioactive Fallout´, is an instrumental with a great retro saw-tooth analogue synth lead line, the likes of which I haven´t heard since Magnum´s ´Chase The Dragon´.

The middle part of the album consists of reflective slower songs which although well crafted, struggle to fully grip your attention. That cannot be said for the album´s standout track, ´The Unknown Artist´; this is a concept track about “the unknown artist perished from a life of sacrifice”. The track is well over eight minutes long; the first section has a haunting verse with a jagged guitar in the style of “Another Brick In The Wall Pt 2”. In contrast, the next section has a Middle Eastern sound beat with a screaming guitar break leading to a middle section with the drums taking control before the rock guitar kicks in for the last time.

The CD packaging is top notch with a nice card gatefold and great cosmos related artwork throughout. In summary, this is a well put together recording and worth a listen to if you are into bands such as Marillion and Pink Floyd.
