A wonderful way to complete or start your AOR CD collection.

Frederic Slama has been a busy boy in 2012, with not one but two brand new albums released under the AOR banner; and now YesterRock have decided to put out another two early AOR albums for the wimps amongst us to enjoy. A little history might therefore be in order for those not in the know about this man and his music.

Slama was born and raised in France, but then moved to America and lived there for ten years. During this time he made a couple of solo albums and also began to find work as a producer but always in the back of his mind was the idea to make some records using the cream of the worlds best session musicians and the good friends he had made over the years while he was living in the US. In 2000 he released the first of these albums - ‘L.A Concession’ which was soon followed by ‘Next Stop L.A’. And even though these albums had the likes of Michael Thompson, Richard Page and Tony Franklin on them, it wasn’t until Frederic’s third and newly reissued album ‘L.A Reflection’ (2002) that the critics really sat up and began to take notice of the man and his music.

‘L.A Reflection’ featured most of the Toto boys, Goran Edman, Mike Landau and a young up and coming guitarist and songwriter called Tommy Denander (nah never heard of him either) on it; but what really stood out then and still does now, is the sheer quality of the laid back songs that inhabit ‘L.A.R’. ‘Sensation’, ‘Never Gonna Let Her Go’, ‘Young And Innocent’, ‘How Will She Find Her Way Back’, ‘I Know You To Well’ and ‘Far Away From The Storm’ are still some of the best tracks ever written, recorded and produced in the west coast style of music; and the years since their release have only made them sound better.

Following on from ‘L.A.R’ Frederic put together another fine line-up of musicians to help him with his musical vision and in 2003 AOR the man and the band released ‘Dreaming Of L.A’. This saw once again Frederic’s old friends helping out and for the first time Steve Overland took his place in the AOR brother- and sisterhood, and his soulful voice immediately suited the songs and music of Mr. Slama to a tee. Personally, however, ‘Dreaming Of L.A’, is, out of these two reissues from YesterRock, the one you have to work at and with, to get the most out of the album. The songs are much softer in approach (and that’s saying something for west coast rock) than nearly all of Frederic Slama’s other work, except for opener ‘You’re My Obsession’ which has Mr Overland on lead vocals. The other tracks that can be found on ‘Dreaming’, such as ‘Lost In Your Eyes’, ‘On Dangerous Ground’, the totally Toto like ‘Malibu Escapade’, ‘Teach Me How To Love’, and ‘Last Days In San Francisco’ are far from instant fixes but on repeated plays they give up the magic contained within each song and even as wimpy as they are, they soon worm their way into your brain and you find yourself totally enjoying what you’re listening to.

With more than forty world class musicians, twenty-six songs and six bonus tracks spread over the two CDs, these two re-issues are great value for money and they are also, either a wonderful way to complete or start your AOR CD collection.
