An exceedingly pleasant surprise.

It seems for this issue* I’m going to continue to tread into territories I don’t often venture into. Having just dipped my toe in the symphrock pool, I now find myself with a modern metal band. Defrage were founded in 2007 and come from Estonia playing a mixture of nu, alternative, post grunge and melodic metal, and their debut ‘Jackal’ is an interesting proposition.

It is beautifully presented package with a rectangular sleeve featuring a wolf howling at the moon. It really makes this record stand out and that’s before you see there’s seventeen tracks lasting 70 minutes. As debuts go this is not only eye catching but it looks value for money too. But would it be too much quantity and not enough quality? The simple answer is “no”. There isn’t a bad track or filler and several songs standout immediately from the first listen. Generally most of them are full of furious guitar riffs, a pounding rhythm section and plenty of raucous vocals although there are a couple of emotional ballads. Despite many tracks sharing similar style traits there’s plenty of difference in pace and intensity which helps ensure this album never gets boring or repetitive. ‘Save Us From Religion’ and ‘Jackal’ get things off to a notable start with the attitude-filled ‘Hotel Breakers’ turning up mid album. The band shows its sense of humour with ‘Put Your Money In Your Ass’ and the Puddle Of Mud/Nirvana mash up, (taking lyrics and riffs from each), called ‘Puddle Of Nirvana’. To prove that dance and metal can work together Defrage have recorded their own bombastic version of Guru Josh Project’s club hit ‘Infinity’. But this isn’t all that’s on offer and the rest is up to you to discover should you so choose.

I have to say I seriously liked this album. It’s not outstanding enough to shift any of my yearly top three but this lively record has a good shot at being in the top ten. I’ve already seen at least one savage review that concludes the opposite so it obviously isn’t one that will resonate well with all listeners. It could be my lack of listening to much alternative metal that helps but I found plenty of the tracks infectious and full of energy keeping my attention to several of them over and over. Defrage play a modern style of metal that has too many subtle influences to make a decent comparison. It should appeal to those into that current genre of music but with its varied tracks and melodic edge it has the potential to appeal to plenty of others. They have made good use of Youtube and I’d encourage you to take a wander onto it and give this a few minutes of your time.

Like Nera Nature and Dark Princess before it, this is another that has unexpectedly caught my ear from out of nowhere and it’s turned out to be an exceedingly pleasant surprise.
