A vast improvement on the original.

It’s becoming a bit of a tradition for an artist to release a new album to coincide with an appearance at our very own Firefest, and last 2011 saw Mitch Malloy do just that and return to Melodic Rock in a big way with the amazing ‘II’ album. So in 2012, another year, another Firefest appearance, and another new album! Well nearly new anyway…

‘Shine’ originally appeared in 2001 on Frontiers, but Mitch was never really happy with the end result, although it was partly funded by Eddie Van Halen. As Mitch revealed when I interviewed him for the Firefest Programme, he always wanted to re-address it and make it better, but some of the masters for some of the tracks were lost and damaged, so he had no choice but to drop some songs and add some new ones. Everything on this new version had to be re-sung, and many new guitar parts were added, but as Mitch’s lead guitar playing buddies were busy touring at the time, he did everything himself – and does a mighty fine job too! So ‘Shine On’ features three brand new songs, two songs completely re-recorded from the ground up, and five songs that are remixed, re-mastered and embellished with new guitar parts, which is why the album has been given an updated title.

So of the ten tracks that make up ‘Shine On’, the likes of ‘You Lift Me’, ‘It’s About Love’, ‘Draw The Line’ and ‘Places Only Love Can Go’ all benefit from a much better sound than their previous versions, and all have newly recorded guitar parts which add to the dynamics. However, the ballad ‘Nothin’ New’ is in fact something new, as it has been completely recorded, and is now a wonderful duet featuring Mitch and his sister Holly, which has given the song a completely different feel, and hints at the Country Music that Mitch has dabbled with in the past.

But it’s the three brand new songs that will hold the most interest. ‘Shine’ formed part of Mitch’s encore at this year’s Firefest, so anyone that was there will know just what a great song it is, but for those of you that weren’t there – shame on you! It’s a hard-rocking tune that’s built around a simplistic but oh-so catchy guitar riff, and an absolutely monstrous vocal performance from Mitch, I don’t think I’ve ever heard him push his voice this hard before! ‘What I’m Livin’ For’ is a great mid-tempo number (with very personal lyrics about Mitch’s daughter) that begins gently, but gets tougher as it builds, and takes a few spins for the subtle melodies to manifest themselves in your head, while ‘Never Enough’ is a punchy melodic rocker with a big chorus.

It’s a vast improvement on the original, the new artwork is designed by Fireworks’ & Rocktopia's James Gaden, and is worth purchasing for the three new songs alone, and will plug the gap until Mitch’s next proper album appears. Let’s just hope it coincides with another Firefest appearance!
