An awesome hard rock album that truly deserves its place in your record collection.

Ever wondered what AC/DC would have sounded like if the diminutive Udo Dirkschneider had replaced the late Bon Scott instead of Brian Johnson? No, I didn’t think so! Well, I’d say if you can conjure up this image in your mind, you’d have a fair idea of what Bullet sound like. Well that’s not strictly true because their infectious brand of bluesy hard rock boogie is at least a couple of beats faster than the Antipodean rock giants have ever achieved and Hell Hofer’s distinctive strangulated vocal roar could be the bastard child of not only Dirkschneider but Cinderella’s Tom Keifer.

‘Full Pull’ is the young Swede’s fourth album and their first since signing with the mighty German label Nuclear Blast. Although Bullet is undoubtedly heavily influenced by AC/DC, there is far more in the way of flash and balls in their approach to their music that are sure to thrill arena audiences around the world. Add to that a brash, youthful swagger and short, direct songs that don’t outstay their welcome – most are around the three minute mark – and you have a collection of songs that are truly killer and no filler, without a ballad in sight. Yes they may be derivative, let’s face it, what music isn’t these days, but they do them so well and the consistency is so high that it doesn’t seem to matter. The quality is so good in fact that it’s very hard to pick out a favourite. ‘Midnight Oil’, ‘Full Pull’, ‘All Fired Up’, ‘Gutterview’….they’re all just great, no-nonsense rock n’ roll songs with tons of attitude and by keeping the arrangements simple, the results are so effortlessly effective.

The tracks that really stand out for me though are the ones that veer out from the shadows of AC/DC; keenly demonstrating that this band have plenty left in the tank. Take ‘Rolling Home’ for example, which at six minutes is by far the longest song on offer, where the dual harmony guitars and well placed keys on its extended outro section give the song added depth and feel. The lazy riff to ‘Warriors’ may veer a bit close to the verse riff on Skid Row’s ‘Youth Gone Wild’ for comfort but this doesn’t stop it from being a well paced, anthemic rocker; due in no small part to the intuitive lead interplay between guitarists Hampus Klang and Erik Almström.

‘Full Pull’ may not be original but it sure is a lot of fun and I guarantee you won’t tire of playing it; I certainly can’t! One thing’s for sure, this is, without doubt, an awesome hard rock album that truly deserves its place in your record collection.
