A prime slice of Melodic Rock.

In John Milton's epic blank verse poem, "Paradise Lost", Adam and Eve are shown slightly differently than they are generally depicted, living in the demi-paradise of Eden, enjoying a chaste relationship, but when tempted by the serpent, the feeling is that Eve is not just enjoying a succulent apple. And Adam, realising she is made of him, joins her in the chomping and are, of course, cast out of Eden.

Whether you feel that the bible story is entertaining hokum or dangerous attempt to subjugate us by explicit threats of eternal hellfire, there can be no doubt that Milton's poem is long. And Eden Lost don't stint either, providing a finely-fettled booklet with their album but also a thick wad of supporting papers, a "dossier" no less, with seven A4 pages devoted to laudatory quotes about their music and performances. Such verbosity could be the basis for ridicule and ensures that the music has to be good to back it up.

No problem here. This second album proper from the Spanish natives is a prime slice of Melodic Rock. There's a sense of 80s big riffs and fizzing synths, but a warmth which beckons to the 70s. Ignacio Prieto has a pleasant gravelly yet smooth voice and guitarist Jesus Laso's lines, though off the peg, are simply right. Where Eden Lost score so highly is in the way they put it together.

Not really adventurous, they concentrate on sounds they know we'll like. And so H.E.A.T are brought to mind as ‘Starting Again’ uncorks a Prog Metal staccato riff but quickly takes us to the stars on a soaring guitar line before unpacking a precociously simple but rousing chorus; they are also at regulo 7 for the title cut, as the bass drives a wedge into the already tight verse and leads the way, picking up a simmering organ, pausing to let a sugar sweet chorus pass and joining in the triumphal solo with abandon.

Too much H.E.AT could be dangerous so it's good to hear them settling back into the Blues for ‘Gotta Be Together’ but still with some musclepower to drive them on, nicely counterpointing the louche sounds within and then completely confounding with a Glammy solo. True, some of these tracks don't cause the breath to be bated and fall short compared to the other stuff here. There are also hints of Hair Metal, Eden Lost not shying away from sharp riffing or a busy production, something they show in the all-in ‘Ready To Rock’, melding AOR twinkling synths to their ripping Melodic attack. Yes, there's a regulation ballad to close, of course but theirs, has a surprising Beatles feel but brings in strings and a bubbling solo to tick every box.

In ‘Paradise Lost’, commentators say Milton was naughty enough to suggest that Adam and Eve might find another place they liked as much. If this is what Eden Lost looks like, give me half a pound of Granny Smith's!
