A really entertaining CD that reminds me in many places of British AOR from around the mid 80's.

Tuscany-based Bad Memories are, in their own words “a melodic AOR/metal band” (not sure what that is). According to their bio (who writes these things?) their music comes across as an amalgam of Danger Danger, Skid Row, Firehouse and Survivor (which of course it doesn’t). But even with all this misleading stuff, written by someone who obviously hasn’t heard their album, Bad Memories have still recorded a really entertaining CD that reminds me in many places of British AOR from around the mid 80’s. Of course, this is no bad thing at all really, though that still says in essence is that they have a slightly dated sound. However, I think of this as a positive for both them and their music because it gives them room to grow.

I’ll start by mentioning ‘Never Too Hard’ a song that begins with a catchy keyboard run, that is soon joined with a guitar riff and solo that brings to mind long hot summer days and to top things off it has a big chorus that is dropped in at just the right moment to make this song a winner. A plaintive piano ushers in the big production ballad ‘Memories’, where vocalist Francesco Cavalieri really earns his money, his emotional delivery brings out the best this song has to offer. ‘Reach The High’ is one of those tracks that nags and nags at you because you know it sounds like something else but you can’t quite put your finger on what. Having said that, the song is still a very good, fast paced, melodic rocker and features some excellent guitar and keyboards from Enrico Dal Canto and Federico Meranda respectively. ‘The Crossroads’ is another big ballad with enough keyboards on it to keep the pink and fluffy brigade (copyright Derek Oliver) more than happy, as are the songs ‘Our Love Is Dead’, ‘Shadow In This Life’ (another keyboard fest) and the wonderful ‘Shooting Star’ with it’s harmony vocals, melodic solos and strong vocals.

Bad Memories (terrible name guys - sorry) have recorded what can be described as a very fine slice of melodic rock and you could do much worse than to check out ‘Forced To Be A Stranger’. I think if they stick at it, it won’t be long before Bad Memories (name change advised) really nail it and we’ll have another very good melodic rock act to contend with.
