In a year many great Melodic Rock releases, sadly this is not one of them.

One thing is for certain, F.E.A.S.T. wins no prizes for originality; they might if they were handed out for cliché and wannabes; because depending upon which track you listen to on this album you can work out who they aspire to be. Bon Jovi, Steel Panther, Whitesnake and Saxon are just a few of the names that popped into my head as I played through the tracks several times.

More than once I pondered whether this was Italy’s answer to Steel Panther until I realised that any humour was purely accidental and these guys are deadly earnest, which is a shame because musically there are some fine moments on this album. Notable is the title track which opens the album with a glorious guitar riff from Fabri Kiareli and Luke Ballabio that immediately had me in mind of Saxon; when Kiareli’s vocals kick in they bear a remarkable similarity to those of a certain Biff Byford. The backing vocals on the chorus are a bit rough but I can see this as a live favourite. While I’m on the vocals, more than once I wondered whether these tracks were the demos rather than the finished recordings because at times Kiareli sounds strained and off-key, but the production of the music belies my question.

In the cliché department we have the Whitesnake-like ‘we are sex gods’ song (‘Pleasure And Pain’) where the double entendres run free (“fill your cup with my fountain, I’m an earthquake coming I’m giving you pleasure and pain”) and the we are Rock gods’ song ‘Heart And Soul’ which owes a lot to Jovi. On this song the vocal delivery sometimes come perilously close to Murray Walker’s infamous ragged edge of adhesion, although the guitar solos are pretty tasty. ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Flame’ ticks every lyrical cliché box as they go on about how Rock is their religion, played guitar all night….., there’s even the break in the middle where the chorus is chanted over just the drums. You can probably guess the theme of ‘Hard Rockin’ Man’ which is lyrically stereotypical (“I’m a soldier of fortune baby”) which again is a shame as the riff is splendid, as is the guitar solo.

On the last of the twelve tracks, ‘Children Of Beslan’ there is a palpable Savatage vibe going on. It tries replicate the mini Rock Opera style for which that band are famous as it recounts the tragic story of a school massacre in South Ossetia in 2004. Whilst I tip my hat at the band for covering a tricky subject for me it all seems a bit contrived and doesn’t flow naturally. It opens with an acoustic guitar and vocal piece before the full band comes in and the tempo rises. The ending appears to be natural with a lovely slowing piano refrain yet the acoustic returns rather un-necessarily.

In a year many great Melodic Rock releases, sadly this is not one of them.
