A very slick and well-played debut album.

The band members of The Spokes hail from Ljusdal, Sweden; having formed in 2000, this is their first full album (the band had previously released a sole single named ´EP´). The band´s press release announces that ´In My Head´ is “big and heavy without the stupid haircuts”! Dangerous words which may alienate many a hirsute rock fan if taken too seriously. However, one thing for sure is that the album is indeed big and heavy.

On first listen, it is very late 70´s rock sounding with a sparse and clear production like the classic Whitesnake albums with Moody, Marsden and Murray. As a result, you can pick out all the chords and all the flourishes which make those ´Snakes´ albums so great. The other Whitesnake comparison is the brazen and unambiguous song titles such as ´Do You Really Want It´ and ´Lay Down In Hunger´!

The guitar riffs, as you can deduce from the above comparisons, are top-drawer and the vocals are a good match – not real classic rock stylistically but more like The Black Crowes in its delivery. The album mainly jumps around from classic rock 4/4 songs to boogie pieces. There are some blues based songs and occasional harmonica interludes; ´Don´t Feed The Fire´ works well in this context being a slow brooding piece. It then leads onto another Whitesnake-esque song title - ´Slow Down (just a little)´ or is that also a bit Deep Purple Mk III? Anyway, this is a standout track with a blistering guitar solo and followed by a question and answer guitar/vocal interlude. ´In My Head´ continues the quality of the album and really stretches the envelope of the band´s simple approach to rock by adding a bit extra to the chorus and adding a bit of funk in every so often.

The album has strength in depth; ´Down In The Water´ lurking as the tenth track, has one of the strongest riffs I have heard this year and with its harmonica accompaniment creates a real cowboy vibe to the track.

The band has produced a very slick and well-played debut album. They have also packaged it well – it is comes as a sturdy and glossy digipack with a neat booklet containing all lyrics and photographs galore. All in all, I recommend you expand your musical horizon to include The Spokes.
