Where you sit is where you stand with this.

Oh gentlemen, do you have to? One acoustic, one voice, in a cottage with no other adulteration. And nowhere else to focus your attention either. Two alumni from Stratovarius and Sonata Arctica stripping back their band songs, solo offerings and some pretty visible covers; fans of a certain genre will love this, but for others, shrugging of the shoulders will be the only movement this release provokes.

There are a lot of different types of "acoustic" and since MTV did their “Unplugged” series with the likes of Alice In Chains, the appearance of full instrumentation but just played a bit quieter has been allowed too. K and L eschew this approach, the extremely stripped back is what they favour, sometimes opening up a song to show its tender beauty. But often not. When it works, as it does on Stratovarius fave ‘Black Diamond’, there is an undeniable drama to the song, set in a low register with Kotipelto relying on nothing but his sense of the song and the gentle airs of the plaintive picking caressing us until the last stanza. Likewise the cover of Pete Townsend's ‘Behind Blue Eyes’ which shows the beauty and aching loneliness which is present in so much of his work. Elsewhere though, what we get is just an unreconstructed blokes jam, two friends having a laugh, the kind of thing that two refreshed friends at a lock in might have a bash at; with more quality, of course.

The cover of the Purps' ‘Perfect Strangers’ at least provides us with something which makes you look twice, all the bombast stripped away but the brilliance of the riff entirely present. But ‘Rainbow Eyes’ already has all that plaintive drama anyway.

This will be popular for what these two did rather than what they do here. Acoustic retreads work mainly when they rearrange the song, take it to pieces and deliver something else entirely whilst leaving the beating heart intact. Here they just take it's trousers off and say "there, isn't that better?"

Where you sit is where you stand with this.
