The band's ninth release.

From my perspective, Hardcore Superstar is one of the best bands in the current scene, surprising us all with each new album as they add different approaches to their music, while still always remaining firmly wrapped up in their own inimitable style. Their ‘Dreamin’ In A Casket’ album focused on a style of sleazy thrash, while ‘Thank You (For Letting Us Be Ourselves)’ was straightforward commercial, melodic hard rock. This time around on ‘C'Mon Take On Me’, the production is pure 1980s, creating a more rocking proposition overall. Yet songs such as ‘Above The Law’, ‘Dead Man’s Shoes’ and ‘Because Of You’, with their melody and commerciality, are still reminiscent of ‘Thank You…’

The album starts with two very rocking but different tracks, ‘Cutting The Slack’ and the album’s title song. They are both quite easy listening but with many different facets they might initially surprise the listener. ‘One More Minute’ is the single, with a chorus that simply burrows into your head, although my choice to showcase this album would have been different… Then comes the amazing ‘Are You Gonna Cry Now’, the hardest song on the whole album definitely being one that would not fit into their ‘…Casket’ release, showing a band coming forth with original and new ideas. While ‘Won’t Take The Blame’ is divided into two parts, which both still share the same chorus.

Although it is the ninth release for the Hardcore Superstar guys, they’ve never had an issue showing their influences and it’s quite obvious Faster Pussycat has always played a part in their sound. Penultimate track ‘Too Much Business’ is a clear example of this, while concluding number, the wonderful ballad ‘Long Time No See’, reveals a sound that is clearly reminiscent of Alice Cooper. Jocke Berg shows what a wonderfully versatile voice he has, demonstrating that he is equally at home on the harder tunes and the ballads. I suspect the softer material Hardcore Superstar has turned to is due to a large extent to guitarist Vik Zino, his musical taste being closer to melodic rock, something he proved with his previous band Crazy Lixx.

The Hardcore Superstar repertoire is now more diversified and not linked to any specific genre as they continue to explore fresh sounds and while I love this album like every previous one, I can still imagine some fans feeling alienated by it.
