A decent record with some decent songs.

‘Artistic Differences’ is the debut album from Slaves To Fashion, a Norwegian four piece playing a brand of music that sits somewhere between hard rock and metal. Originally a band known as P:O:B, they released an album in 2007 by themselves and according to their press release, it garnered excellent reviews but couldn’t find a label due to “the originality of the work.”

That, to me, sounded as convincing as when Spinal Tap’s manager Ian Faith claimed the band playing to smaller audiences was not due to dwindling popularity but was, in fact, a sign the audience were becoming more discerning. Nevertheless, German journalist Frank Jaeger formed the label Hands Of Blue with “one specific goal”, which was to bring these guys, now using the name Slaves To Fashion, to a wider audience.

Was the effort worth it? Well, first off, ‘Love You Back’ isn’t bad and best of all, Johannes Stole on vocals not only has a good voice, but sings relatively accent free which is a deal breaker for my tastes. The production by guitarist Torfinn Sirnes, supported by his band mates, is bright and punchy and the playing is more than competent.

‘Mrs Hero’ is highlighted (literally, printed in red on the back as oppose to white like the other tracks) as the choice of single and I assume is meant to be the stand out track, but ironically, despite its heavy riff, I thought ‘Made To Meet The Eyes’ beat it all ends up, thanks to a superior riff and chorus.

Many of the songs have a contemporary rock sound, as evidenced on the chorus to ‘Superstar (I Want Out)’ and the powerhouse ‘I Want You Back’. The heaviest moment comes from ‘Left Out In The Cold’ which has some serious riffing and paradoxically ‘Out Of Here’ is quite ethereal and atmospheric. The breakneck ‘Libido Ride’ storms you towards the last track, the band’s epic ‘Facts On The Ground’ which clocks in at ten minutes, meandering through an instrumental intro, heavy riff, acoustic section, march and Deep Purple-esque organ and guitar trade off before finding it’s way back.

It’s a decent record with some decent songs, although if I’m being brutally honest when it finished I couldn’t remember a single track. Obviously Frank Jaegar believes in what the guys have done, so maybe it’s just me. Time will tell.
