Title

This could quite easily be one of the albums of the year.

Where would we be without Frontiers? Not only are they home to classic bands like Journey and Whitesnake, and some of our most beloved artists such as Tyketto, Ten and Night Ranger, they’re leading the way with the current stalwarts of the scene like Craxy Lixx and Eclipse: they’re not averse to taking a punt on an up and coming band either. Last issue saw reviews for the debut albums by their new signings Gene The Werewolf and A Perfect Day, stylistically poles apart yet both excellent albums: Which brings us onto Diamond Dawn.

A young six-piece group formed in Sweden in 2011, they released the song ‘Standing As One’ digitally and began to gain interest from a handful of record labels, yet none were willing to seize the initiative…until Frontiers came along that is. And why nobody else was interested is a complete mystery as this is an absolute corker of an album! It’s utterly chock-full of energetic Melodic Rock anthems dripping with stunning melodies, hooks and harmonies, dominated by stylish guitar runs and pomp-tinged swathes of keyboards. Yet unlike many albums of the genre, it somehow manages to steer clear of becoming formulaic and clichéd and the mature arrangements assist it in sounding remarkably refreshing. Though Diamond Dawn don’t really sound like either band, if you imagine the classiness of Work Of Art blended with the youthful vigour of H.E.A.T then you won’t be far away. H.E.A.T are a further point of reference, as the soaring vocals of Alexander Strandell are at times vaguely reminiscent of their fellow Swedes original singer Kenny Leckremo.

By now I would have hoped you’d heard the insanely catchy first single ‘Take Me Higher’ being streamed from somewhere, and the rest of the album just gets better, from the glorious pomp of opener ‘Into Overdrive’, the stylish piano-led ‘Crying’, the majesty of the aforementioned ‘Standing As One’, the punchy ‘California Rush’ and ‘Indestructible’, the anthemic ‘Turn It Up’ and wonderfully melodic ‘Give It All.’ There’s also the sheer beauty of sole ballad ‘Don’t Walk Away’, though emotional and heartfelt, is also amazingly inspirational. Then the dynamic ‘Powergames’, which closes the CD, demonstrates that this bunch of young upstarts will have much more to offer in the future.

Frontiers are releasing this album on the same day as the sophomore W.E.T. CD, a move which could result in ‘Overdrive’ being slightly overshadowed by JSS and Co. But that would be an absolute travesty, as while I love both records, after living with both of them for the same length of time, its Diamond Dawn that is edging it for me. The finest Melodic debut release of its kind since… well, that wonderful first H.E.A.T effort, and the type of album that is an essential purchase for EVERY single Fireworks & Rocktopia reader, and though it’s so early in 2013 this could quite easily be one of the albums of the year. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.
