Among the best of what the AOR and West Coast genres have to offer.

Formed as a spin-off project from Last Autumn’s Dream, Heartbreak Radio debuted in 2005 with their first self-titled release, incorporating a myriad of special guest musicians like Tommy Denander, Mikkey Dee (Motörhead) and Magnus Rosen (Hammerfall), while LAD front-man Mikael Erlandsson sang three of the songs, and Elevener vocalist Pierre Weinsberg the remaining eight. The production team of Torbjorn Wassenius and Claes Andreasson kept the project on ice until a new line-up could be formed, and ‘On Air’ finally sees the return of the project.

Musically it’s a silky smooth AOR / West Coast hybrid that stylistically harks back to the seventies and pays homage to the likes of Journey, Toto, Christopher Cross and Bill Champlin. This time around though there’s a core of accomplished Swedish musicians that remains intact throughout all ten tracks on the album, with the vocals provided by various specially selected singers.

Once again Pierre Weinsberg is present, with the opening two tracks straight out of the top-drawer. ‘Love On Fire’ is a sweet and concise up-tempo pop-rocker with a wonderful chorus and irresistible melodies and ‘Angelina’ a little more restrained, but augmented with tasteful guitar licks and swirling piano flourishes. ‘You Are Love’ is mid-tempo laid-back fare incorporating a jazz-tinged bass-line and sung by Olof Bengtsson – and the only Swedish singer with this name I can find with Google is from Thrash/Death bands Disborn and Icons Of Horror – if it is the same then all credit to him as the vocals here are smooth and powerful. Mikael Erlandsson has three credits to his name again, ‘Turn On Love’ is a lively jaunt embellished with Jazz piano and tasteful saxophone and the occasional big-band feel – you could honestly imagine Michael Bublé performing it – while the moody ‘Live Out Of Love’ is about as Rock as this album gets and the irresistible ‘My Heart’s Just Missing You’ is just about everything an AOR song should be.

Solo artists Martin Gabriel and Ulrik Arturén appear on the slightly funk-tinged ‘Keep Kickin’ It Back Again’ and pure West Coast Jazz of ‘All Over The World’ respectively and Darkwater singer Henrik Båth delivers the meandering ballad ‘You Don’t Love Me Anymore’ that closes the album – replete with gorgeous acoustic guitar solos and extended piano interludes. Best of the bunch though is Alien front-man Jim Jidhed’s stunningly passionate delivery on the sublime ballad ‘I Will Love You’, awash with lush orchestration, wonderful guitar and classy female backing vocals.

It’s definitely at the lighter end of the spectrum of what Fireworks covers and won’t be for everybody, but anybody who appreciates the best of what the AOR and West Coast genres have to offer will absolutely love it.
