2013 could be a great year for Heaven’s Basement.

I guess you could say Heaven’s Basement have something of an eventful history. Though they have been active since 2008, the band’s origins can be traced back to Roadstar and before that Hurricane Party. Roadstar were formed in 2003, but after disbanding in 2007, the core members decided continue with a new name. Several line-up changes means only drummer Chris Rivers now remains since 2003 and the main change in the make-up of the band was the departure of lead singer Richie Heavanz back in 2010.

When I saw ‘Filthy Empire’ in my review pile for issue 56* I was less than thrilled to say the least. I caught the band supporting Halestorm back in September and, though they seemed to connect with a large part of the audience, in the main they left me cold. Their approach was quite clichéd and the songs lacked any real quality. Imagine my surprise then when I got through the first spin of the disc….I liked it! Two or three spins later and those feelings had been compounded considerably.

‘Welcome Home’ and ‘Fire, Fire’ are pumping melodic rockers and an aggressively punchy way to get the album started. Throughout the remaining 10 tracks there is a good variation in style and the overall pacing has a nice balance between up-tempo rockers and slower more thoughtful pieces. One or two songs, such as ‘I Am Electric’ and ‘When The Lights Go Out’, have a hint of sleaze and punk (but only a very slight hint) and each track on 'Filthy Empire' seems to contain a hook with an immediate impact. The energetic attitude is maintained from the first song to the last without any real dip in quality and the production, courtesy of John Feldman (Good Charlotte, Papa Roach) highlights some solid performances. Sid Glover’s guitar spits riffs and solos with a venomous intensity and singer Aaron Buchanan exhibits some impassioned vocals, the laid back ‘The Price You Pay’ worthy of particular mention. 'Fire, Fire' and 'Nothing Left To Lose' have been selected as singles, both achieving radio attention, but if I'm honest there are a number of songs with the potential for commercial success.

With the right exposure and a high profile support slot, 2013 could be a great year for Heaven’s Basement. Maybe the next time I catch them live I won’t be quite as dismissive.
