A quality production accompanied with a DVD.

Le Reverie is a US gothic nu-metal band founded in 2010. Being female fronted there are obvious comparison with Evanescence – singer Allie Jorgan’s classical vocal delivery and the industrial guitar sound are somewhat reminiscent. However, the band is different and has its own style and it is dangerous to base too much on an obvious parallel.

The album starts with an orchestral sounding strings and synth instrumental entitled ‘La Naissance’ with keyboards played by The Mysterious O.G. This is immediately followed by the title track with a well formed staccato guitar sound and the aforementioned classic operatic vocals. ‘Twisted’ then moves the album more into gothic territory with an ominous piano based introduction and a stunning wah pedal heavy guitar solo supplied by Jeff Mallow.

There are some powerful moments; ‘Le Reverie’ (The Dream, which is the French translation) in particular let’s rip with crunching guitar chords interestingly accompanied by a tinkling piano which kind of works. Again, there is a great guitar solo and to be honest Mallow impresses throughout with his Slash meets Satriani style.

Jorgan’s voice on the whole comes over really well; it is pushed pretty hard throughout and my steer would be not to push it any further as there a signs it may start to falter. With this style of music, there is inevitably a formula that is followed – piano introduction, emotional verse and rousing chorus with crashing guitar power chords. This is the upside and downside of Le Reverie; this is what they do. The album includes some great examples of the genre; interestingly the last track, which is a reprise of ‘Ghost Of You’, is a standout song and ensures ‘Dark Symphony’ ends on a high.

This is Le Reverie’s debut full album (following their 3-song EP entitled ‘Truth And Lies’) and it is a quality production accompanied with a DVD containing their video of ‘Hold Me Down’. Hailed as Dream Theater with a female singer, there is a good chance they are going to make a big impact on the music scene.
