Truly wonderful stuff.

Arguably the band’s most creative and enduring period (well, there’s really no argument is there?), Kiss celebrate the brilliance of Neil Bogart’s Casablanca label by releasing all 29 Kiss singles in two fantastic box sets. Vinyl nuts will be more than chuffed to see the seven inch 45-RPM singles while others can still be pleased with the separate CD box set; both containing the same 29 singles with B-sides.

The box sets are neatly timed given that it’s the band’s 40th Anniversary in 2013 and on the back of their excellent albeit stupidly titled ‘Monster’ album. There’ll always be debates about the various line-ups of the band, which is better and which is worse and so on, but Kiss fans in their millions still prefer Ace Frehley and Peter Criss on lead guitar and drums, respectively. Most of the singles in these sets had different mixes and edits from the original releases which were for sale to the public or released to FM radio stations and the press. Gene Simmons himself even claims that he hadn’t heard all the various mixes and edits and he’s Kiss’ biggest fan.

It would be futile to go through every track but suffice it to say there’s no stone left unturned. There’s a German sleeve of ‘Let Me Go, Rock ’N’ Roll’ / ‘Hotter Than Hell’, a Japanese sleeve of ‘Shout It Out Loud’ / ‘Sweet Pain’, a UK sleeve featuring Paul Stanley ‘The Starchild’ of ‘Hold Me, Touch Me’ / ‘Goodbye’ and other individual member sleeves of ‘The Spaceman’ Ace Frehley, ‘The Demon’ Gene Simmons and ‘The Catman’ Peter Criss. Track 29 is a US sleeve of ‘I Love It Loud’ and ‘Danger’.

The box sets themselves are wonderful and regardless of how often Kiss release or re-release products they don’t often do things by halves although the recent reissue of ‘Destroyer’ did not please all that many people. Both sets come in die-cut shadow boxes with limited edition silver metal plates and ribbon-pull magnetic closures. There are also picture sleeves from the various releases around the world while the seven inch singles come in purple, blue, red and green colours. There’s also a booklet which details the history of each single. Kiss have always been larger than life; it’s what they’re all about. Some love them for it while others just don’t get the appeal. (I’m in the former camp.) It’s truly wonderful stuff. I wonder how many fans will buy both sets?
