UFO, MSG and Scorpions fans will no doubt appreciate this hugely enjoyable release.

The story of Michael Schenker reads like the clichéd fall from grace of a once truly powerful rock icon. The former Scorpions and UFO guitarist remains highly revered by rock fans for his past work and though there have been glimpses of greatness since his personal struggles first came to fruition (at least in the public eye) in the early 1980s his best work remains firmly rooted in the past. He has picked himself up in recent years with his acclaimed ‘Temple Of Rock’ project and his live releases. This excellent double CD features some of his best known songs from throughout his career with the Scorpions, UFO and MSG. The Gary Barden era MSG studio albums and ‘One Night At Budokan’ are tremendous but for many fans Schenker did his best work with UFO in the late 1970s and 1995’s ‘Walk On Water’ from the UFO-Schenker reunion was pretty damn good too.

The term ‘Temple Of Rock’ is a continuation of the foundations of rock that began with the likes of such 1960s icons as Led Zeppelin, The Who and Cream and then built upon by AC/DC and UFO in the following decade. The Scorpions and Judas Priest, in Schenker’s eyes, reinforced the sound of rock in the 1980s. Perhaps we shouldn’t talk about the 1990s, then?

CD one includes a thirteen track concert from Tilburg in the Netherlands with singer Doogie White, drummer Herman Rarebell, bassist Francis Buchholz and rhythm guitarist/keyboardist Wayne Findley accompanying guitar wizard, Herr. Schenker. Singer Michael Voss makes an appearance on ‘Hanging Tree’ and does a fine job too. Some of the standout numbers include ‘Armed And Ready’, the always reliable MSG classic and the equally awesome MSG rocker ‘Assault Attack’ as well as the UFO numbers ‘Let It Roll’ and ‘Lights Out’. Doogie White is on fine form and the overall sound of the band is strong.

CD two features a further six tracks from the Tilburg concert recorded in May 2012. The Scorps and UFO numbers are excellent, including ‘Rock You like A Hurricane’ and ‘Rock Bottom’. There are also some bonus tracks (five in total) from 2011’s High Voltage festival in London featuring Rudolf Schenker on ‘Rock You Like A Hurricane’ and ‘Hanging On’ and an ensemble cast (Rudolf Schenker, Doogie White, Jeff Scott Soto and Pete Way) on ‘Doctor Doctor’. The sound quality is excellent and Michael can still make a riff sound heavenly. UFO, MSG and Scorpions fans will no doubt appreciate this hugely enjoyable release. ‘Temple Of Rock – Live In Europe’ comes not only as a double CD but also on DVD and Blu-Ray.
