A supergroup of sorts Raven Lord prove to be less than the sum of its parts.

Real, true, proper metal should have you beating the air with a charging fist and headbanging to within an inch of your life as the power surges through your veins. It should be cranked up to 11, releasing untold joy in your body. The likes of Dio and Judas Priest carry you high on giant shoulders of kings of metal. This is not a scenario likely to happen listening to Raven Lord and their debut album, ‘Descent To The Underworld’.

A supergroup of sorts – made up of established musicians from the world of heavy metal – Raven Lord prove to be less than the sum of its parts. A jaded-sounding ‘The Rebel’ starts things off and the album fails to find its feet enough to recover. The parts are all there: high pitched screams; epic battles; fire and flames; demons. But it fails to gel and feels like a lot of posturing as the songs lack any real strength and fight. Only ‘Let The Show Go On’ stays with you thanks to Csaba Zveknan’s explosive, empowering lead vocal.

All is not entirely lost, as a dynamic performance by ex-Killing Machine lead singer Zvekan and a truly excellent aural axe attack throughout the album by guitarist Joe Stump is the unexpected joy, force-feeding some life into each track. But with a rhythm section of ex-Tony Martin (ex-Black Sabbath) bassist Jamie Mallender and ex-Blaze Bayley drummer Lawrence "Larry" Paterson laying the foundations, the end results are expected to be better.

With so much promise, ‘Descent To The Underworld’ sounds like the power has been turned down to a safe level, when you can feel it aching to be let free.
