If this is the Everlasting Dawn then I’ll happily let this sunrise last a very long time.

Everlasting Dawn is a female fronted Melodic Death Metal band from Austria. ED was started in 2010 by multi-instrumentalist Dave Slut taking a firm musical direction with the arrival of the other band members including singer Lisa Tomantschger and secondary guitarist Richard Gschank. The band’s debut ‘Frozen Hearts & Bloody Whores’ is out now.

‘Demon And The Whore’ kicks off in colossal style with a cacophony of guitar but as Tomantschger appears with her gorgeous vocals the edge seems to be taken off. There is a massively oppressive riff, soaring soprano vocals mixed with death scowls and a relentless rhythm section. Yet throughout the rich keys and musical interludes add a melodic edge to the harshness. ‘Snowstorm’ has frenzied axe work that rolls into a keys infused sprint with lovely vocals. ‘World Domination’ starts with galloping drums and a frenzied riff then Tomantschger jumps in with punchy lyrics as Slut growls away underneath. The chorus contains another huge riff and a truly memorable vocal section. ‘The Secret That You Keep’ explodes with a thundering progression and double drum foundation as Tomantschger wails in the background turning them into words following the same luscious tune. For all the fury there’s passion abound in ‘Frozen Inside’ and ‘Testament’. ‘Frozen’ begins with another huge riff and synth melody that gets quite rampant. The verse is a little more stripped leading up to the chorus where the guitars and skins intensify again. ‘Testament’ is a beautiful ballad and my favourite track. Tomantschger delivers her most emotional lyrics backed by acoustic guitar, piano and strings. The chorus arrives with a vast power ballad riff as Tomantschger really opens up into full soprano mode. This was one that really stuck in the head from the first listen.

This album is absolutely amazing and an utter juggernaut. I bloody love it and even after multiple plays I am not bored of it yet. Be under no illusion, at times it is blisteringly heavy with very dark lyrics and many readers may find this too far down the riotous road. As mad as it sounds, Melodic Death Metal is a pretty truthful way of putting ED’s style descriptively. If you’re looking for a comparison think Epica or After Forever with a little less orchestral inclusion. The Epica comparison extends to Tomantschger who is stunning as a vocalist and really reminds me of Simone Simmons. The production is top notch and everything is at the right level to allow the whole thing to be heard. If your tastes extend to seriously furious guitar work with exquisite female singing then Everlasting Dawn is a band for you. If you love that symphonic beauty and the beast styling you should also be taking an interest. However if you find growled male vocals totally off putting, prefer less aggressive symphonic or melodic rock in general then this will be too hostile.

For me if this is the Everlasting Dawn then I’ll happily let this sunrise last a very long time.
