A superb melodic power metal band with a big sound, great songs and an album that they should be rightly proud of.

Last time, I had the great pleasure of reviewing Argentinean band Helker and their brand new album. Fast forward a month or so and I am proud once again to be the man allowed to tell you of another Argentinean act that you must (really MUST) hear. They are Thabu and, for me personally, are one of the most promising progressive metal bands that I have heard in some time.

Thabu come across as Argentina's answer to Symphony X and Adagio, due mainly to the impressive guitar work of Santiago Diaz and the killer vocals of Chilean native James Robledo, who is obviously a long lost son of Russell Allen. So, being a big fan of the X, this album was always going to appeal to my musical sensibilities. 'Reborn' is the second release from the band and it is one of those rare albums that doesn't have any fillers on it. Thabu have written, recorded and produced an album of the highest quality with songs that are powerful and yet filled with a maturity and subtly, that defies their short existence.

As mentioned, this album has no fillers, so picking out the best tracks to tell you about is challenging but here goes. 'Beyond The End' is almost seven minutes of prog metal perfection. A plaintive piano slowly ushers in the song, until the soaring vocals of James Robledo and the guitars of Santiago Diaz take over; the track then builds minute on minute, getting more intense and visceral as it continues, until it fades away leaving you gasping for more. 'A Game Of Lies' is power personified, passionate and dynamic; the track is all that is best about Thabu. Then we have the awesome 'Fictionating The Present' another six minute plus epic, that see James Robledo really come to the fore with his immense vocal range. Then we have the totally different yet superb instrumental 'Violentango'. Imagine if you can a Saturday night and watching 'Strictly Come Dancing', when the guitarist and accordionist in the orchestra suddenly go insane and try to out-play each other as some Z-list celebrity tries to dance to a metal tango and then you might just be close to what this song sounds like!

Anyway, Thabu are a superb melodic power metal band with a big sound, great songs and an album that they should be rightly proud of, and I really urge you to go investigate…
