One for those that fancy something a bit different.

Vampyre Heart is a female fronted Gothic Rock band from Bournemouth. They have spent their early years working on performing and putting together their first album and 'The Ghost Of Time' is culmination of that work.

The first thing that struck me was the ambition of this project. VH have pulled out all the stops with their first release creating an eighty minute, double record. Thankfully due to mixing up the pace and compositions, it's doesn't bore. As if that wasn't enough, running parallel is a book and story that accompanies the music. Side one fields the guitar and keys fuelled tracks such as 'Devil's Mercy', 'Why Did You' and 'Lost Within The Shadows'. There are lots of dense chugging riffs, gothic pulsating synth and vocal effects. The highlight of this part is 'She Cried'; it hit the spot from the first moment and it remains my favourite. The song has a slow build up and a chorus that is exceedingly infectious. Side two shows the more emotional side of VH with four ballads, including the nine minute 'Afraid' and the haunting 'Come Love Me Tonight', which itself is eight minutes and for me the other standout track.

This is a highly original debut from the Bournemouth outfit. In terms of style VH play has lots of subtleties and it takes several listens to let everything unfold but the more you do the better it gets. I can't think of a real comparison for this unconventional record but as a start think a female fronted Sisters Of Mercy or The Mission with the guitars turned up. Summer is a unique singer with an expressive lower range voice that has a certain darkness about it. She can deliver with a snarl, yet shows sensitivity and vulnerability on the ballads. DSoul gives a fine display on the six string with some long winding fret work, plenty of deliciously deep revolving progressions and lots of malevolent riffs. He's also responsible for all the synth and keys and it's his work that really creates this unusual sound. If I have one personal critique I would like to have seen a slightly crisper finish on the technical front, with Summer raised a little higher in the mix especially when surrounded by the dense gothic arrangements. But overall 'Ghost' is an album that I found very agreeable, especially due to the groovy guitar and keys work.

It's one for those that fancy something a bit different. It seems this is one Vampyre Heart that has the potential to beat strongly.
