Give Early Cross a listen and I'm sure you'll enjoy their music.

Usually, I'm not the biggest fan of the bios that come with some of the album promos you get for review. To tell you the truth a lot of them seem to be utter rubbish, written by someone who hasn't even heard the album they are writing about. They always seem to mention three or four bands that the artist they are meant to promote are supposed to sound like – but never do; but because they are playing music in roughly the same genre as those acts, then the info they write down will suffice.

The bio for Early Cross mentions Opeth, Porcupine Tree and Riverside as reference points for the band and their music, if you add in a healthy dose of Sabbath like riffs as well, then for the first time (ever) the bio has got what the band sounds like just about spot on. Those reference points seem even stranger though, when you find out that Early Cross are from Japan and have a Ukrainian-Japanese female vocalist who, at times, reminds me of a more wistful Sharon Den Adel. So a Japanese band with an album filled with doom laden, heavy dark progressive rock music, might be a new one on us all but let me tell you, the songs on 'Pathfinder' are strangely addictive, and I wanted to hit the repeat button as soon as the album finished playing, so I could enjoy their music all over again.

'Hymn To The Fallen' has a big guitar riff tempered only a little by the sultry voice of Natasha Vaichuk, whose sad and emotional vocals seem to be the perfect foil for the powerful dark heaviness created by the bands musicians Yugo Maeda, Yushi Soutome and Hiroaki Kato. 'The Pilgrimage' is fifteen minutes of melancholia driven by the sadness derived from the brilliant Natasha Vaichuk. Her poignant vocals joined with the superb musicianship of her band mates makes this epic track unforgettable, while to conclude the album we have 'The Fog' which the band describe as landscape rock music and, with it's sweeping themes folk elements and heavy riffs and emotional vocals, I can understand why.

'Pathfinder' is another album you could file under the word 'different' and it is also one that will appeal to the many fans of the heavier (yet melodic) music that Fireworks & Rocktopia like to tell you about. Give Early Cross a listen and I'm sure you'll enjoy their music, even though it might not be what you were expecting.
