Eureka Machines have come of age. Don't miss out!

Three albums in and pop-rocking Eureka Machines have hit the bull's eye with their fan-funded 'Remain In Hope'. A band who have always been capable of combining observational, humorous lyrics to hooks as sharp as the edge of that bit of paper you keep cutting your finger on, the Eureka's first two albums, 'Do Or Die' and 'Champion The Underdog' made their mark. 'Remain In Hope' smashes them to insy-tinsy pieces.

Having been an integral cog in Ginger Wildheart's recent "Pledge" album campaigns, it came as no surprise when EM's guitaristing singer Chris Catalyst steered his day-band down the same fan-backed path. However what was surprising was just how many fans there actually were, with far more than the original target being raised. Thankfully, the foursome, who also include Davros (guitars), Pete Human (bass) and Wayne Insane (drums) didn't just cram the filthy lucre into their bag marked "swag", instead deciding to invest their "pledges" straight back into the album. What a masterstroke! Huge and I do mean HUGE production standards embellish a set of songs that find the quartet rightly brimming with confidence and maturity, proving that no band should be judged before their third proper outing.

Taking a risk (which pays its way big style) by kicking off with the slow, introspective Beatlesy 'Good Guys Finish Last' is clever but track two is no risk at all, with 'Pop Star' genuinely being the song worthiest of hit single status I've heard for a long time. In fact, everyone I've played it to loves it. Instantly. And keeps asking me to play it again! It's catchy, it's memorable, it's crammed with fun and clever lines like "I am an artist, I live to feel... and I sell my soul if I get more than 50p!", while being as sing-alongable as you can imagine without ever wearing thin. From there 'Love Yourself' jaunts along between power-pop and classic Quo, 'Getting Away' is pure Wildhearts guitar grit and cracking chorus, 'Affluenza' bleeps and bloops like some poppy rockin' Atari game, while 'Living In Squalor' ups the riffage through surging bursts of guitars that thrill and excite. They are great songs one and all (as are the other five), however it is the glittering, shining production that really raises the whole 'Remain In Hope' album far beyond initial expectations.

  • SeaDog57 : just an observation. I just got Issue 89 at the Bookstore and when i looked at the spine of the magazine it says "Fireworks Issue 85 Winter Jan - Mar 2019" Was this a misprint? The rest of the Magazine is Issue 89. Was just wondering did anyone else notice this?
