Milou may be 'Reborn' but she still has some growing up to do.

Layla Milou is a German female heavy rock singer and has been performing since she was fourteen in school choirs, school bands, and even with some established local bands and her first album 'The Pink Parade' was released in 2009. Milou now returns with follow up 'Reborn'.

'Reborn' contains twelve songs with most being up tempo heavy rock or punk rock tracks with a couple of ballads. There are two profanity laced entries in the dirty metal opener 'Porn' and the punk styled 'Fuck You'. Two of the more notable songs for me are the single 'Access Denied' and 'Murder In High Heels'. 'Denied' has a modern chugging riff fuelling the verse, which goes into over drive for the punchy chorus. 'Murder' has a sleazy hard rock vibe that flows into a rather catchy chorus. Some of the other tracks lean more towards a punk rock fusion like 'Sexy Race' and 'Circus Of The Dawn'. 'Disconnected' is a lively track that reminded me of Buckcherry and their riotous style of rock.

'Reborn' also features two guest appearance duets. The first 'Your Own Control' featuring Paul Di'Anno (Iron Maiden), is a straight up metal beast with a traditional composition (think early Doro), and some fiery vocals from Di'Anno. The other, 'Bloody Valentine', includes Tony Martin (Black Sabbath), and is a lovely emotional song with some acoustic axe work, plodding rhythm and a chorus that has a touch more bite thanks to the added crunching guitar. Closing out is the thumping club re-mix of 'Access Denied' by the cult Clawfinger remixer Jocke Skog.

This isn't up there with some of the outstanding current releases, but 'Reborn' is an agreeable and above average album from an interesting prospect. In terms of style, this is modern rock bordering metal in places with a punk twist. I can't think of any direct comparison although if you stuck Doro, Avril Lavinge with Buckcherry in a blender this would be the likely outcome. Milou isn't the strongest vocalist I have come across and her style may not work for everyone, but she just about pulls it off and she'll certainly improve as she matures. As far as production goes, the quality is good with a raw and uncomplicated finish. This is an amiable release but it just isn't as good as other albums out right now. Milou may be 'Reborn' but she still has some growing up to do.
