A release that has the spirit of English classic prog of the 1970s running through its veins.

This is a conceptual album for progressive rock purists from Italian musician, composer, keyboardist and guitarist Cristiano Roversi and featuring appearances by seven musicians and three guest vocalists including Le Orme's Aldo Tagliapietra and PFM's Bernardo Lanzetti (whose distinctive style is like a cross between Geddy Lee and Phil Collins!). Roversi is a founding member of progressive band Moongarden and is also a member of Mangala Vallis but also has umpteen collaborative and solo ventures to his name prior to this release.

Wonderfully encased by absolutely terrific artwork from Ed Unitsky, Roversi says this about 'AntiQua': "I wanted to dedicate myself completely to a solo album ...independent of market or stylistic pressures...an album...in which I didn't have to crank up the volume. AntiQua is a strange land where time flows at a more natural pace – I don't really know if it's on our planet, or even if it exists in the past, present or future, near or far...AntiQua manifests when we need it, every time we give in to dreams and forget about the daily grind. It certainly did me a world of good, a brief trip to a land governed by antique ideals of beauty and harmony. I hope it may accompany the quietest and sweetest moments of your existence as it has mine..."

It is clear that Roversi has significantly achieved his objectives. Often languid and placid and with wonderful soundscapes largely created with various combinations of all manner of guitars and keyboards plus gentle symphonic flourishes, this is not an album to assist with "the get up and go" but one to aid relaxation and reflection at the end of a perfect day. Largely an instrumental album, the two male vocalists (above) plus Leonora Cardellini (on 'Falling') each helps to create a release that has the spirit of English classic prog of the 1970s running through its veins.

Do I have any criticisms? Well, really only the one – and it's my bête noir of lengthy tracks finishing on a fade. Several of the tracks here do that, but most annoyingly it's the nearly 14 minutes of 'Tales From Solitude Suite' that is the most blatant and unnecessary culprit! On an imaginative release, this is a terrible indictment!

Otherwise, I can highly recommend 'AntiQua' to any prog rock fan whose interest overall has been piqued by these comments, as it's rather a gem.
