A superb album and one of the best in the genre this year.

When talking about female fronted Gothic and Symphonic genres there is a pretty important name to remember. Morten Veland was at the forefront of establishing the genre in the nineties with Tristania before he left and formed Sirenia in 2001. Since then the band has recorded five albums, the last two with vocalist Ailyn. In 2013 Sirenia is back with 'Perils Of The Deep Blue'.

There is a word I like to use to describe an album like this and that is a "juggernaut". 'Perils...' kicks off with the dreamy intro of 'Ducere Me In Lucem' before the humongous 'Seven Widows Weep'. It's a Symphonic delight with a massive riff, big choirs and an exhausting rhythm section. This release has other gothic treats like the powerful 'Cold Caress' and the modern edged 'Decadence'. Towards the end of the album there is the twelve minute 'Stille Kom Doden'. It's a multifaceted and complex composition with many time and melody changes as it rolls along. But from the first listen there were two songs, along with 'Widows', that I just couldn't get out of my head. 'My Destiny Coming To Pass' has gothic chants and strings to open before a furious riff erupts. Ailyn's delicate vocals rise from out of the whirlpool of sound that churns around her. The chorus is seriously catchy with a vocal hook that just swirls round your mind. My favourite, 'Ditt Endelikt', unusually happens to be the only male focused song with guest vocalist Joachim Ness on vocals. The verses start with just Spanish guitar and bass before the electrics come smashing in driving on to the most infectious of choruses that I promise you'll struggle to remove from your mind.

We have already been treated to some unbelievable Symphonic Metal releases this year and this is another one that is up there with the very best. 'Perils...' is an exquisite and mesmerizing album and in my opinion the finest yet by Sirenia. I was surprised quite how heavy it is in places but Veland has managed to create something that is bombastically powerful yet manages to retain the melody despite the musical onslaught. His guitar work is impressive as always and on 'Perils...' he has decided to really let rip on all fronts. Ailyn continues to shine and this beautiful performance shows her continued confidence with a willingness to experiment and expand her style. The mixing and mastering are as polished as you possibly hope for and it gives the album the perfect finish.

'Perils...' is a superb album and one of the best in the genre this year. I recommend you investigate this colossal sounding album and let its joys wash over you.
