A thoroughbred metal offering, beautifully crafted to link the classic metal sound to the twenty-first century.

When Elixir reformed back in 2001, one of the primary objectives was to have fun. "We said that we would just see where things take us," says guitarist and founder member Phil Denton, "and as long as we were enjoying it, and the five of us stayed with the band, we would continue". With three studio recordings and a live album Elixir had a great run for their money, and in 2012 the band split once more, leaving Denton and vocalist Paul Taylor with a hunger for more and an album's worth of ideas. The pair continued to write and demo material as they began auditioning a new line-up, and with the recruitment of guitarist Dave Strange, bassist Dusty Miller and drummer Darren Lee Midnight Messiah was born.

Musically, 'The Root Of All Evil' – unsurprisingly – isn't a million miles away from the path Elixir have always walked. It's solid, traditional British metal, riff-driven and hook-laden. 'The Root...' is a thoroughbred metal offering, beautifully crafted to link the classic metal sound to the twenty-first century. Check out opener 'Thirty Pieces Of Silver' – as exhilarating a slice of metal as you could wish to hear – and revel in the excitement of a heads-down, traditional yet thoroughly contemporary guitar-driven workout. And while you're thinking about that with barely a pause for breath 'Damned For All Time' comes crashing in to join the party, upping the tempo and putting drummer Lee through his paces.

There's so much to get animated about – this is an album that's all lean meat and no fat – but particularly noteworthy is 'The Wise Man Of Roklar' which boasts a wonderful guitar work-out which live could be stretched out for forever and a day and still leave fans shouting for more. Like the best entertainers though, Midnight Messiah save the best till last. The penultimate cut 'You're No Friend Of Mine' is all speed 'n' swagger and comes complete with a good old-fashioned guitar battle between the two six-string-slingers; and 'You Put Me Through Hell', a slower, melodic and almost downbeat closer, gives Taylor some space to show what he's made of and allows Denton and Strange to solo away in true harmony. Elixir fans will no doubt be expecting a handful of old songs in Midnight Messiah's live set, but I'd be happy just to see them plug and play 'The Root Of All Evil' from start to finish: it really is that good.

To start with the CD has been released in a hand-numbered digipack, limited to 1,000 copies, so take your credit card for a walk now to www.coldtown.com.
