This is Brit-Prog of the highest calibre.

The latest album from a band that celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2012 nestles neatly into what I insist upon calling the "Brit-Prog" genre: progressive rock music mostly of a gentle, whimsical, pastoral (often with acoustic instrumentation) nature. It is only the fourth album from Primitive Instinct (PI) in that period, and perhaps unsurprisingly it is the first entire album to which my attention has been draw, although my music collection does have the track 'Slaves' from their debut album 'Floating Intangibility' released in 1994, on a Cyclops sampler, which strongly demonstrates their early potential.

There have been various band formations over the years, but founder member, guitarist, principal song writer and lead vocalist Nick Sheridan has been the one constant, the remainder of the current line-up comprising bassist "Pic" (who has been around for 23 years), keyboardist Jonathan Vincent and drummer/percussionist Graham McGarrick. Their sound is as tight as a Scotsman's wallet and although Sheridan's vocals are neither the strongest nor most expressive you will come across in this genre, they do actually work very well contextually. Repeated plays have also really highlighted the wonderful arrangements throughout the album: the very best being found on the magnificent concluding song and mini epic 'Regrets'. This one is highly likely to be in my top five songs of 2013, and is exquisitely and immediately captivating.

Indeed, not only is 'One Man's Refuge' a musical triumph, it is also an album with great lyrical imagination and when I heard "With your eyes of green and your soda streams..." in the song 'No Way' I needed to double-check what I had just heard! Indeed, there isn't a weak link on the album, every track producing something special for the listener attuned to this type of music. Along with the already praised album closer, I really should draw attention to the three consecutive tracks in the middle of the album for special praise: 'Solitary Man', 'One Man's Refuge' (the title track) and 'End Of The Day' as these encompass all that is really magical about this album and have me smiling like the Cheshire Cat every time I hear them.

This is Brit-Prog of the highest calibre, believe me, and if you do and musically what I have described appeals, then get yourself down to www.primitive-instinct.com to score yourself a copy at the best price.
