Could be a west coast-oriented act to be applauded.

In his review my colleague Alister Strachan summed up the debut album by Chasing Violets in one word, "frustrating". He mentioned that on an album that featured the talents of Frédéric Slama, Tommy Denander, Alessandro Del Vecchio, Göran Edman, Bob Harris, Paul Sabu and members of Alien, Hardline and Lionville, things couldn't be all bad. Which of course they aren't but just like him, I found that it wasn't the musicians or producers that seemed to be holding this project back.

Unfortunately, it's the two sisters who essentially are Chasing Violets: Sarah and Melissa Fontaine. As Alister pointed out the two ladies do have perfectly listenable voices but fail to set the songs found on their albums alight, which is maybe the sticking point in Chasing Violets becoming a world renowned west coast band. Maybe it's down to their accented vocals (the girls hail from France), or the lack of vocal excitement put into their song delivery; but whatever it is that stops the songs on both the debut album and this sophomore CD 'Jade Hearts' from reaching the lofty heights that they should attain, it is as Alister commented, very frustrating.

Frustrating because throughout the twelve tracks that make up this new CD, you can hear the big potential these two young women have at their finger tips and with a little more passion and drive injected into the vocals, Chasing Violets could be a west coast-oriented act to be applauded.

There are some pretty decent songs on 'Jade Hearts', yet as good as they are, there is a certain ingredient missing and furthermore this is an ingredient that could potentially make the songs on the album not just good but really great!
Maybe the third album will unlock that potential? (Let's hope so).
