I really, really like this album.

I'll declare from the off that I really, really like this album. The first time I played it (without paying much attention to the booklet) I assumed that Dead Lord were Irish – not because they look particularly Irish (they actually look like what we Brits would call swarthy Mediterranean types), but because the album was recorded in Dublin and the band's sound is reminiscent of Thin Lizzy. Now, don't go out and buy it thinking it's going to be another 'Jailbreak' or 'Bad Reputation' because it's not; but the way the songs are constructed ('Ghost Town'), the at times almost minimalist staccato riffs where the songs breathe and lyrics run free ('Hammer To The Heart'), the beautifully fluid and exciting twin guitar runs ('Because Of Spite') and the narrative approach to the lyrics themselves ('Hank') all conjure up Phil and the boys in full flight. And face it, that's no bad thing in itself.

I really, really like this album. I like the classic metal sound it evokes and the way the band are gloriously retro without drowning in nostalgia like an oversized overcoat: they know how to tap into the vibe without just regurgitating the past note for note. The "swarthy Mediterranean types" – Hakim Krim (guitars and vocals), Olle Hedenström (guitars), Tobias Lindkvist (bass) and Adam Lindmark (drums) – are actually from Stockholm (the clue's in their names) giving rise once again to the thought that although the Devil might have all the best tunes, the Scandinavians play 'em better.

The Thin Lizzy analogy widens a bit with 'Onkalo' – again interesting lyrically, as Onkalo is a long term underground storage facility for Finalnd's spent nuclear fuel – nodding its noggin to 'Holy War', the aforementioned closer 'Ghost Town' calling 'Hollywood (Down On Your Luck)' to mind and the fact that at times Hakim Krim does come close spookily close to sounding like Phil Lynott. But all this is mere icing on a very fine cake. Dead Lord have a lot to say and the voice with which to say it, and the evidence is clear to hear in 'No More Excuses' – again there's a touch of Irish influence in its 'Still In Love With You' sympathies, but just when you think you've got its measure it ups sticks and shifts into a different gear, guitars battling and heads shaking.

I really, really like this album. Did I mention that? Dead Lord? Dead good, more like...
