This is one hell of a debut release.

Every so often up pops a band which simply craves attention and one such act is progressive metal band Tyranny Of Hours from Portland, Oregon. Their self-titled debut album is an exciting blend of power and passion, and despite the musicians' relative youth their confident and expansive CD easily holds its own against some of the genre's big names. Imagine a female-fronted Symphony X and you're in the right ballpark, but that's just for the purposes of comparison: Tyranny Of Hours have an identity of their own and a bright future ahead of them. Check out 'Above The Salt' for its guitar pyrotechnics, 'The Hapless Wand' for its vocal performances, 'Transvaal Sphere' for its complexity and the galloping run of 'Amber' just for the hell of it. Oh, and if every album had a song as good as 'Vain Hope' on it, the world would be a better place, believe me!

The origins of the band date back a few years to a meeting between guitarist Don Graham and vocalist Michelle Mattair, and although they didn't work together at first they eventually formed In Vellum in 2010. "It wasn't much different to Tyranny Of Hours," recalls, Graham, "but it was more prog rock, not nearly as metal, with a classic Seventies feel. We realised we wanted to be heavier, more dramatic, more modern, so we ended up writing a more symphonic metal song called 'Destined For A Memory'" [the lyrics of which incidentally contain the line: 'the tyranny of hours, it bleeds us, won't release us']. "When In Vellum called it quits Michelle and I had two or three of the first Tyranny Of Hours songs scratched out and we decided to keep going no matter what. We hired session drummer Larry London and spent the next eighteen months recording the album. Along the way, Larry became a full member, and right as we were finishing the album we hooked up with Jordan Harrington as our bass player; up to that point I'd handled the bass but we got Jordan in on the last session and he recorded the bass parts for 'Dark Symphony'".

The band have a variety of influences ("all of us have varied backgrounds and, combined, we have played just about every style of music on the planet!") which inform and enliven the album's eleven cuts, although over and above everything else 'Tyranny Of Hours' is a progressive metal dream – symphonic, spectacular and beautifully, beautifully crafted. "The only real struggle," adds Graham, "was to take the songs and make it sound like a half-million dollar album for one-tenth of the price." And you know what? They succeeded.

This is one hell of a debut release. Credit card at the ready, go and visit www.tyrannyofhours.net.
