A Power Metal concept album based on Richard Adam's book 'Watership Down'.

This is a Power Metal concept album based on Richard Adam's book about rabbits, 'Watership Down' that even includes a cover of the song 'Bright Eyes' from the cartoon version of the book that was a huge hit for Art Garfunkel. On paper it could be a monumental mismatch of Spinal Tap proportions but chest beating heavy metal and furry rabbits aren't as polar opposite as you first think, if you dig (or should that be burrow) a little deeper.

The themes of the book, and thus the concept here of having to flee one's home and to seek out a new land are timeless. The ideas share a lot in common with the ancient Greek mythology of Homer and Virgil, which have often been dipped into for metal songs. So having decided that rabbits are indeed a suitable topic for metal, does the music do the story justice?

The band keep it varied and there are a couple of tracks such as 'Spring In The Warren' and 'False Paradise' that offer acoustic respite from the metal thunder. Elsewhere it rocks hard. 'Prince With A 1,000 Enemies' scampers like a March hare while the 'Premonition' is a real heavy thumper (sorry about the pun). 'Between Angel And Tears' is also heavy but has a more melodic metal ethic than power metal and 'The Tale Of Rousby Wood' is a pretty good, solid stab at proggy power metal with some interesting time changes, some heads down, blistering drumming and some melodic guitar duelling. 'Sasso Spasso' is a jazzy interlude that while well done feels totally at odds with the rest of the material on the disc. There are choirs included such as on 'Spring In The Warren' which give the sound an added dimension and separates their sound from more generic Power Metal bands.

Alessandro Conti's vocals are fitting for Power Metal but they can be heavily accented such as on 'Bright Eyes' and the lyrics are often over wordy, trying to pack too much into a line creating added difficulty for Conti. The book used to divide people. There were those who thought it was genius and those who weren't keen as they couldn't get past the idea that it was a story with a furry, talking rabbit that was having premonitions. This album is likely to do the same thing. Calling the record 'Rabbit's Hill Pt1' suggests there's another instalment to come, which will be a carrot for those who like this earnest prog but will send others scurrying back down the rabbit hole.
