If you're a Floyd fan you'll enjoy this.

This is Daryl Lynch and James Kwlelinski's eleventh album together as Moon Bird. Lynch is based in Phoenix, Arizona and Kwlelinski is in New York, but they prove that distance is irrelevant thanks to the power of technology.

They've woven together a fine example of atmospheric prog with both men contributing vocals, guitars, synths and drum machines. Pink Floyd looms large over the disc. Vocally, there are similarities to Roger Waters and they're often multi-tracked to create a richer sound. Lyrically too, like Floyd, there's a depth that runs deeper than boy meets girl. There's an eco-awareness and revulsion at man's mistreatment of the world thread running through tracks. The guitars too have a strong David Gilmour feel, with long, slow, achingly beautiful solos.

There are only eight tracks and two of those are repeated in different arrangements so, in essence, you're getting only six tracks but there's enough going on in those tracks for you not to feel short changed. 'Perfect Summer' draws you in with its Floyd meets Barclay James Harvest vibe. 'Toxic Sky' has a sweet melodious guitar solo that precedes the strongest track on offer, which is the seven minute 'What's Going On'. It has a terrific mid-section with atmospheric voiceovers, a haunting mantra of "Poverty, poverty" and then a strident rhythm guitar that recalls Floyd's 'Another Brick In The Wall'. I'm not usually a fan of drum machines, here they don't cheapen the sound but work unobtrusively. Studio trickery is a feature of their sound which helps it feel progressive and helps distance them from Floyd, at least a bit. The songs work their ambient charms slowly, allowing the tracks to build momentum gradually drawing the listener in captivatingly, which is a tricky thing to do with ambient rock as it can have a tendency otherwise to slip into the background.

If you're a Floyd fan you'll enjoy this and it is a credit to both musicians involved that they've created a sound that is as expansive and polished as their illustrious influences.
