Very well produced and mixed with a satisfying separation of instruments and vocals.

During his short but productive tenure with UK guitarist Vince O'Regan in Legion, US singer and multi-instrumentalist Phil Vincent's solo career has been taking a bit of a back seat of late, the Rhode Island resident concentrating mostly on the UK/US collaboration and his 'other' band D'Ercole. However, with Legion seemingly at an end, the solo albums are set to resume with startling regularity, starting with the thirteen track 'Face It', which also has last year's twelve track, digital-only release 'Solar Flare' as a bonus disc.

Responsible for everything except some of the guitar solos – which are handled mostly by guest O'Regan and one each by usual collaborators Billy Roux and ex-Airborne man David Zychek – Phil has delivered one of his strongest sets so far. He's wearing his influences a little less on his sleeves these days and the dense-riffing of 'Long Hard Road' and the punchy 'Sooner Or Later' could easily have been heard on a Legion album, but that's just one facet (sorry!) and there's plenty of light and shade in the power ballad 'We All Die Young' and the excellent 'Can't Go Back'. 'Make Up Your Mind' is inventive and has quirky bits and 'Divided' has nicely arranged pop sensibilities, but it's also good to see Phil going back to his previous lighter style for the highly melodic 'Burning Bridges', the rich harmony vocals of 'Changes' and the infectious 'Nothin' But Time'. Vincent's Legion experiences seem to have made him a better vocalist and he's not afraid to belt it out or try his hand at the a capella 'The Lost Self' or equally gentle closer 'Full Circle'.

'Face It' is very well produced and mixed with a satisfying separation of instruments and vocals, but if that isn't enough there are a few more highlights on the 'Solar Flare' bonus disc, from the simple and effective rockers 'Northern Lights' and 'All Over You' to the killer AOR tune 'It's Finally Over'. The sparser and lighter 'This Is The Moment' and 'Between Us' are well-written and sung, whilst the lengthy epic 'The Last Goodbye' may well be the best of both discs. Whilst not quite as rich and powerful sounding as the main event, 'Solar Flare' adds a few different styles and consolidates the release into a value-for-money package.
