Self-titled debut by the Swedish Prog Metal band.

So over-populated has this genre of music become, I'm genuinely beginning to think that if every current member of a Prog Metal act went out this very afternoon and bought a CD by a different Prog Metal band, the cash injection into the music business would be enough to save it from impending doom!

From that you'll gather that Tucana, a bunch of Swedes who've been (in some shape or form) working together since the 80s, are indeed Progressive and Metal. However they are also theatrical, bombastic and heavy rock. In places what this self-titled debut reveals is quite impressive, in others all of those effects are a bit too much to take. Musically these guys are tight, in fact very tight, with the expansive keyboard work from Jonas Nitz proving to be quite a revelation, the talented tinkler having the panache to take on a whole host of roles ranging from orchestral grandeur, to intimate plaintive pianist.

To weigh the good with the not quite, singer Niklas Birgersson lacks for restraint control, with his all or nothing delivery positively thriving on the heavier, Mikael Larsson led guitar sections in 'A Dream Within', or the almost Dokken like 'Stranded Illusions'. Although proving overbearing and all a bit "am-dram" when the six-string histrionics are toned down, as they are in 'Rescue Me' or 'Seven'. Here it begins to feel like you've wandered in on Saturday night prime-time TV where Sir Andrew of Lloyd-Weberness is sat gurning on a garish throne, watching wannabes ham it up.

There has been a lengthy gestation for some of the music served up here, meaning it isn't a huge surprise that there's a distinctly disjointed feel to the album as a whole. That fact alone isn't enough to scupper things completely. However to stand out in this now ridiculously crowded genre, simply being skilled musicians and having the ability to stylishly arrange songs, isn't really enough to truly impress any more.
