An album that personally I think is quite wonderful.

If I begin this review by telling you that two members of the trio that comprise Poltergeist founded the post-punk band Echo & The Bunnymen and that one of them, guitarist Will Sergeant, is still in that band along with drummer Nick Kilroe, some of you might be inclined to stop reading now, but I urge you not to do so!

The third member of the band is bassist Les Pattinson, and between them the trio have produced a fascinatingly atmospheric instrumental album containing elements from classic prog, neo-prog, psychedelic rock and krautrock and with a smidgeon of punk in there too! I was never a fan of Echo...(it's the vocals, you know)...here the Liverpudlians, unconstrained by lyrical requirements, have not only produced an album with an oeuvre-transcending title, but six of the seven other songs unfettered by lyrical necessities have titles that exhibit wildly imaginative tendencies that point to the eclectic nature of what lies within.

Across the album there is so much more than a Fender Telecaster with lots of reverb, bass and drums. There also seems to be quite a lot of what sounds like synthesisers and various FX, and apparently these emanate from "a box of tricks" manipulated by Sergeant. Well, combined with wonderfully complex compositions that will impress even the crustiest of prog rock aficionados, there are eight magnificent slices of instrumental genius. 'Cathedral' with its crunching, fuzzy riffs leads us to the title track: initially rather too close for comfort to bass-heavy indie rock it develops much more promisingly with some gloriously waspish guitar sounds and amazing psychedelia. 'Dreamer Dreams Of Spectrums' is mesmerizingly avant-garde at times while 'First Signs Of The Plague' initially delivers a luscious soundscape with a mystical feel before changing completely into something with an angry and abrasive aura! 'Dawn Visits The Garden Of Eden' is another psychedelically tinged number whereas the jaunty mid-tempo 'Psychic Warfare' almost surprises with its almost traditional structure. 'The Book Of Pleasures' and 'Lune Deeps' provide the concluding 13 minutes in a contrasting yet wonderfully involving atmospheric manner.

Sergeant's comment that "the album has some of the heaviest sounds and also the saddest guitars I have ever come up with; it is a trip" is a worthy appraisal of an album that personally I think is quite wonderful. I do believe that some of you reading this will agree wholeheartedly with me...
