Does have its moments.

Formed by members of VII Gates, Titan and Persuader, Swedish melodic rockers The Rockford Heroes play (at times) a kind of retro fuelled melodic rock. Their Bio (heaven help us!) says their music will remind you of an amalgamation of Queen, Styx and Kansas with the metal attitude of Savatage??? Which of course it doesn't! Instead, I heard a lot of early Swedish rock influences like Alien, Glory, Mogg (remember them?) in TRH's music. Before I get to the songs though I must mention two niggles with this album. Firstly, I found the production at times lacking the clarity and power this band need for their music (probably a budgetary problem) and secondly, eight songs and only just over thirty minutes is a little short for an album these days.

Gripes aside TRH start out with the one, two, three attack of 'No Reason To Believe', 'The Day Of Return' and the album's big ballad 'Forever', which show a band who have a superb knowledge of melody and the right time to use it. From here on in, however, the band changes tack and harden up their sound with the final five songs having a much heavier, more metallic approach to the song writing and performances, with 'And Then There Was Temptation', 'Capricious Arrows' and 'A Split Second Goodbye' all sounding if they were by a completely different band, than the one that started the album. This threw me for a while and made me wonder if TRH hadn't quite decided just what type of rock they wanted to play when they began making this album: the pink and fluffy variety (copyright Derek Oliver) or the melodic metal stuff. I hope by album number two they will have to made up their minds, for song cohesion if nothing else.

So this is a release made up of different styles of rock that made listening to it a rather odd experience. Nevertheless, taken as a primer for what might come next (whichever way they decide to go musically) 'EOTS' does have its moments.
