Saffire have a cracker of an album on their hands.

Swedish melodic prog/metal powerhouse Saffire, started life as a High School funk rock band. When then drummer and main song writer Victor Olsson swapped the drum stool for a guitar (see interview elsewhere), the destiny of the band was sealed. And instead of funk we now find a band ready to hit us straight between the eyes (pun intended) with their early Rainbow/Dio influenced debut release.

While you're playing this album you will find that Saffire have a love for the powerful and warm Hammond organ sound that graced many an album way back when, which they then incorporate into the more modern prog metal stylings that encompasses the songs that make up 'From Ashes To Fire'.

As debuts go this album is pretty damn good and I found myself enjoying their classic mixture of retro rock and modern prog immensely. The opening three tracks clearly demonstrate what you need to know about the music of Saffire, as they encapsulate all that is best about this band and its music. A big riff ushers in 'Magnolia' which is then joined by the superb grinding keyboard melody courtesy of Dino Zusic, the powerful vocals of Tobias Jansson then take over and you know you're listening to something special. Then there's 'Kingdom Of The Blind', a track that threw up (in my mind anyway) comparisons to a heavier Pink Cream 69; Victor Olsson's solo's like a demon on this song and again the driving keys of Dino Zusic help the track to live and breathe. Finally there's 'Freedom Call' a swaggering rolling ball breaker that has a massive chorus and melody that you'll be humming for days.

With another seven tracks of equal quality to find out about for yourselves, I can only say once again that Saffire have a cracker of an album on their hands and you the Fireworks and Rocktopia faithful, will, I think, just love what is going on throughout this release. It's another surefire winner from Inner Wound (he says alliteratively!)
