Welcome back with open arms Coney Hatch!

Twenty-eight years after their last record 'Friction' who'd have thought that Coney Hatch would grace us with their presence again in the Rock world with a new album? Hands down all except Mr. Ashcroft at the back because I don't believe you!

Titled 'Four' to signify the fact it's their fourth album and also features the re-united original four members (after Barry Connors had replaced Dave Ketchum on drums for 'Friction'), this is a remarkable release as I was always convinced that they were hugely underrated, and were incredibly unfortunate that they weren't able to ride on the coat-tails of the L.A. Hair Metal explosion of the mid eighties, and even more so after seeing them at Firefest in 2011. So it's definitely a welcome return for these Canuck purveyors of Melodic Metal. Nothing's been left to chance as the fearsome foursome resume right back where they left it on '83's 'Outta Hand'. Sounding like they'd never been away and Melodic Metal still ruled the airwaves, they crank it up with Carl Dixon's personal favourite of the moment 'Blown Away', a mid-paced romp through all that was, and is, good about Coney Hatch and possibly due to be the lead-off single.

Carl shares vocal duties along with bassist Andy Curran and aside from 'Blown Away' he sings on the breezy summery Rocker 'Revive' and the mid-tempo cool vibe of 'Keep Driving' with its punchy riffs, sing-a-long chorus and slide guitar solo. He also gets to grips with the up-tempo Rocker 'The Devil U Know' and pacey rocker 'Down & Dirty' and handles the ballad 'Holding On' with measured maturity, preventing it from becoming too sentimental. Andy covers 'Connected', a staple traditional Coney Hatch rocker with sharp guitar attacks, and 'Marseilles' which has that AC/DC vibe and is inspired by their love of Ice hockey, in particular the Montreal Canadians legendary defence-man Jean-Claude Tremblay.

But interestingly, my current three favourites are all sung by Andy. 'Boys Club' has a great tone on the guitar intro with good solid riffs and a strong chorus that may become a live favourite. 'Do It Again' is a breezy rocker with a mixture of acoustic guitar and rhythmic riffs and a crunchy chorus with Steve Shelski ripping the solo. But my number one choice is also the heaviest song they've written in 'We Want More', a slightly down-tuned track with a fast-paced chorus that powers along on a huge riff that will get everyone headbanging in the aisles – great stuff!

Welcome back with open arms Coney Hatch!

What a fantastic album this is. I made the mistake of listening to this CD on my way to work the other day. Made it tough to drive with my head banging in time to a perfect offering of melodic hard rock.

Welcome back with open arms, indeed. Fans of Coney Hatch need to get this, and get this now.
