A future classic.

It's been a frustrating couple of years for multi-national melodic metallers Eden’s Curse. After their excellent third album ‘Trinity’ they had an acrimonious split with their original singer, then thought they'd found his replacement after working painstakingly through a comprehensive list of possibles, only to have it fall apart and start the whole process again. With keyboard player Alessandro DelVecchio also bowing out due to his thriving career as a producer, the band were down to the core trio of bassist Paul Logue, guitarist Thorsten Koehne and drummer Pete Newdeck, until recently adding Power Quest keyboard player Steve Williams and singer Nikola Mijic.

To say that the new line-up have worked well together would be understating the case somewhat, ‘Symphony Of Sin’ immediately cementing its place as the most cohesive and confident set of songs the band has recorded so far. From the epic orchestral intro of the grandiose title track to the irresistible hooks of closer ‘Where Is The Love’, it’s a near perfect rollercoaster ride of moods and emotions that will give Curse fans plenty of the band’s familiar hallmarks but also a few moments that are refreshingly different. ‘Unbreakable’, for instance, is a real earworm with lighter instrumentation than we’re probably used to, but sits perfectly amongst more tradition EC fare like the aggressive ‘Break The Silence’, the insistent ‘Turn The Page’ or the straight hard rocker ‘Sign Of The Cross’. Mijic is superb throughout, from his soulful Glenn Hughes-like work on the awesome single ‘Evil And Divine’ to the rawer strains of ‘Devil In Disguise’, or the emotional power ballad ‘Fallen From Grace’, he can handle it all and puts his own distinctive stamp on every song.

Thorsten Koehne is one of the unsung heroes of modern guitar and puts in his usually inspired performance, as does Steve Williams, whose keys push already great tracks like ‘Losing My Faith’ and ‘Great Unknown’ up another notch with his tasteful contributions. With a special mention for the scintillating title track, the catchy ‘Wings To Fly’ and the perfect marriage of hard rock and pop that is ‘Rock Bottom’, as good as the performances and production are, it’s the songs (presumably mostly the domain of Paul Logue and Pete Newdeck!) that make these extra touches possible, and on ‘Symphony Of Sin’ they’ve got all of the composite parts completely nailed down. A future classic!
