If you're a fan of the debut then this album will be a huge disappointment.

2010's Roadrunner release in Canada only, 'Small Town Dead', was something of an undiscovered classic. Tapping into the modern hard rock genre and ably produced by Bob Marlette, it seemed to have everything except perhaps the backing of the label. The band were subsequently dropped and their second album 'Four' (a reference to its four members, comprising two sets of brothers) was fan financed through Pledgemusic.

It's clear from listening to this album that the band was being pushed in a direction that they didn't want to go by Roadrunner as this is almost as far away from the sound of the debut as you can get. Gone are the co-writes with Tyler Connoly, gone are the modern rock clichés and the hook heavy chorus and gone are the layers of studio wizardry that adorned that album. In short if you're a fan of the debut and the familiar modern rock sound then this album will be a huge disappointment. However, if you've got a taste for old school rock entrenched in the seventies then 'Four' might just get your approval.

Huge dollops of Free style tunesmithery can be heard on 'Go Home' and first single 'Last Cigarette' and there are expansive touches of Led Zeppelin throughout; most notably on 'Shine', 'She Said' and the bluesy 'I Feel Like I Belong' mainly due to Taylor Perkins' Plant tinged vocal delivery. A shock to the system this might well be, but there's no arguing with the quality offered by the retro romp of 'Livin' Like This' or the stomping glam tinged 'Love Sick'; both clear highlights on an album that sees Bleeker Ridge reinvent themselves.

If you can get over this discernible hurdle then there's a half decent album waiting to be discovered.
