Lacking direction, dynamism and any semblance of a hook or melody.
2010s 'Love Is In The Missile' was an extraordinary tour de force of mainstream modern rock, harnessing great melodies and hooks to a framework of beefed up guitar. Follow up, last year's 'Beautiful Alien', saw a shift in sound away from the mainstream and away from the major label. It was definitely not for the better, lacking direction, dynamism and any semblance of a hook or melody.
'Passage To The Sun' hopelessly and rather unfortunately follows the downward trend and actually manages to plumb new depths of awfulness. Can this really be the same band that recorded gems like 'Ashes' or 'Sunburn'? Hard to believe it when you hear the aural diahorrea of the aptly sludge orientated 'News From Oblivion' or the equally morose 'Eclipse'. 'Summer Swingin' is about as summery as a barbeque in a snowstorm and the cover of Alanis Morisette's 'Hand In My Pocket' is even more depressing than....err...Alanis Morisette.
'Passage To The Sun' should really be renamed 'Passage To the Dustbin' as it's one of the early modern rock Christmas turkeys of 2013. It's currently being made available free to download on the band's website. Just as well because no one should have to pay a penny for this inane dirge.
