An impressive debut.

Face Off is a Serbian based female-fronted metal outfit and 'The Colour Of Rain' is their debut album. They were formed in 2006 by vocalist Marija Kovacevic and guitarist Stefan Vitasovic. Until now they have concentrated mainly on their native homeland where they have been featured on national radio and TV.

To say the album is heavy would be something of an understatement, but don't let that put you off in any way. Thunderous drums and intense riff provides the backdrop to the uncompromising yet melodic music of the opening title track whilst Kovacevic's vocals, both ethereal and passionate, act as a soothing compliment to the musical battery. 'Dream Chamber' and 'Close Enough' display great imagination and highlight some excellent performances. Subtle time and tempo changes would normally suggest 'progressive' (oh no!) but the conservative running times never allow the interest and attention levels to falter. 'War Against War' is as heavy as Machine Head (the band), demonstrating that Face Off have the ability to marry melody and aggression effortlessly and I am often reminded of the UK's own Season's End.

The scope of the material is bold and bordering on gothic at times but not quite in the epic category due to the lack of orchestral and choral embellishments. Throughout the nine tracks Face Off never pause for breath. The drums destroy everything in their path like a psychotic artillery unit whilst the twin guitar attack of Vitasovic and Aleksander Djordjic melts away any semblance of resistance. Vladimir Novicic's production has great clarity, providing a monstrous soundscape, the way music like this should always be presented. Although Kovacevic's pronunciation has occasional traces of an accent it is never a distraction and she exudes great skill for someone so young.

'The Colour Of Rain' is an impressive debut and Face Off would certainly benefit from tours and exposure outside their own country. Any 'female metal voices' festival would be a great showcase for this talented band and I only hope some of the promoters out there recognise the potential.
