A terrific album that some rock fans will love, while others will no doubt hate.

Originally released in 1975, 'Warrior On The Edge Of Time' is in the eyes of many fans probably the definite Hawkwind album, so much so that a review is almost entirely futile. This is the first remastered edition made from the original analogue tapes of the space rock classic. Atomhedge, the owner of the band's catalogue from 1975 to 1997, have done a stellar job with this release. There are, in fact, not one, not two, but three versions released: the standard version, a three CD version and a super deluxe edition. The standard edition, which I have received, also includes the single B-side of 'Motorhead' as a bonus track.

The line-up of Dave Brock, Nik Turner, Lemmy, Simon House, Simon King and Alan Powell recorded perhaps one of the definitive space rock albums of the decade, with lots of lyrical input from acclaimed science-fiction/fantasy writer Michael Moorcock, while the album's concept is slightly on Moorcock's Eternal Champion, which is essentially a fictional multi-verse. The album was a success of sorts for the band, hitting Number 13 in the UK and Number 150 in the US, which was the last time the band made the American Billboard 200 album charts. Although it has to be noted that not everyone in the band was especially happy with the outcome of the opus, notably Lemmy, who has since scathed it in the press. It's not an easy album to stomach, with typically long synth passages, sweeping instrumentation and trippy melodies, and it lacks emotion which the more casual fan will have trouble with.

The spacey 'Spiral Galaxy 28946' and the powerful 'Magnu' are two standout tracks, while 'Assault And Battery' is probably the toughest song on the album. The sheer musicianship on 'The Golden Void' is exemplary and 'Kings Of Speed' is a hell of a track. Parts of the album do sound somewhat dated such as 'Opa-Loka', but overall 'Warrior On The Edge Of Time' is a terrific album that some rock fans will love, while others will no doubt hate. But that's Hawkwind all over, right?

There had been a number of changes to the line-up of the band prior to the making of this album, their fifth release, so it does represent some sort of stability in the Hawkwind camp and it shows in the overall feel of the album. However, that stability wouldn't last until the end of the year – but that's another story!
