This is one scandal you're happy to be embroiled in.

Spicy Bits Of Scandal...now that's an irresistible name. With a deluxe gatefold sleeve featuring an angel hacking off her wings and such a salacious name this held great intrigue. I had never heard of S.B.S. before and I suspect nor will many others which is a bit of a shame. They have been around since 1979 spending almost a decade performing before their first album 'Menulio Sviesa'. They followed this up with three more prior to this their latest, 'Heaven Can Wait'.

The Latvian quartet plays what I would describe as Classic Heavy Metal with added Progressive and Gothic elements. There isn't a permanent keyboardist instead they relied upon guests including virtuoso Maestro Mistheria and Ferdy Doernberg, (Axel Rudi Pell, Eden's Curse). That classic sound can be heard loud and proud on 'Against The Whole World' and 'Kiss Of Judas'. Both feature a Hammond-like sound and progressions that reminded me of Deep Purple. Speaking of the Purps, I couldn't help but love 'Religion Of Rock'; it's an invigorating track with a progression that is a total homage to 'Burn' but with choruses that break out into a Power Metal chant. The group's progressive credentials are best displayed during the seven minute 'House Of Evil' with its tempo changes and musical twists and turns. The two most Gothic songs are 'Bloody Wedding' and 'Puer Malus – You Are The Witch'. 'Wedding' reminded me of 'Hey Stupid' era Alice Cooper whereas 'Puer...' has a traditional riff and gets its gothic input from the keys and catchy chorus.

This is one of those tough reviews because while I think this is terrific fun, I'm not sure how many others will share my enthusiasm. I mean where else can you hear Deep Purple and Power Metal together? "Why would you want to?" might be the reply. I admit it sounds as mad as the latest EU regulation but whilst 'Heaven...' may have its negatives, they are more than made up for with some fine musicianship and some groovy, classical influenced tunes. Although a few are clearly Purple inspired, 'Heaven' as a whole brought to mind another musical comparison which is Dio.

The biggest issue some might have is the singing style of Vitalis Kairiukstis which is unusual because of his pronunciation and accent. I found it off putting at first but after a while it didn't bother me much at all. If you can also get past that then you'll find an album full of melodies and Classic Rock/Metal axe work. If that poses some interest then why not see have a peek online and see if, like me, this is one scandal you're happy to be embroiled in.
